Your contributions fund research that is running right now, with results published openly on this website:
Food Forest Lab — four documented experimental food forests, measured every year;
Dry Orchard Experiment — growing productive edible plants with less water;
Mango Project — research for a successful mango cultivation in the Mediterranean;
the hidden world of Root Systems of Food Trees — for growing healthier, more productive gardens;
and the salt tolerance of edible plants irrigated with brackish borehole water — practical help for many Algarve gardeners.
Our 2026 Projects
Your support directly funds what comes next:
Bringing the garden to children and students. We run workshops designed for children and teenagers, welcoming classes from local high schools, international schools and homeschooled kids. We also host older students: hospitality students from the Escola de Hotelaria e Turismo de Vila Real de Santo António, and bachelor students of horticulture — such as those from Le Centre du Végétal in Brive-la-Gaillarde, France. We ask only a small participation fee, which does not cover the real costs — instructors, hands-on activities, printed materials. Your support fills that gap.
Publishing the Food Tree Academy manuals. Seven practical guides — fruit tree selection, planting, care, irrigation, propagation, pests and diseases, and the physiology of subtropical food trees. Written, tested in our workshops, and being refined for publication.
Hands-on workshops in the garden. One day, one skill: small-group workshops (maximum 18 participants) taught among the trees by our instructors.

These are non-monetary donations that can significantly benefit the Botanical Garden. You can submit your proposal to miguel@orchardofflavours.com. All contributions are subject to our board’s approval.
