Pest & Disease Control - Armored Scale
Armored Scale found on a tree at the Orchard of Flavours Botanical Garden.
Armored Scale Pests: A Threat to Plant Health
Armored scale pests are a common problem for gardeners and farmers, causing damage to plants and reducing yields. These tiny insects secrete a protective wax coating, making them resistant to pesticides and challenging to control.
Identifying Armored Scale Pests by looking for:
- Small, black bumps on stems and leaves
Our Solution
At the Orchard of Flavours we use Biological Predators by Koppert Laboratory as a natural solution:
We use Parasitic wasps called Aphytis Melinus that lay eggs inside the scale bodies which control populations of armored scale.
You can also encourage biological predators by:
1. Maintaining a diverse garden with wildflowers to attract and house beneficial insects with a variety of plants
2. Avoid broad-spectrum pesticides which harm beneficial insects, disrupting the ecosystem
3. Release biological predators produced by Koppert Laboratory, introducing natural enemies to infested areas as we do in the botanical garden
4. Monitor and adjust by regularly inspecting plants to make sure biological control predator populations are surviving
Additional Tips:
- Inspect plants regularly for early detection
- Prune infested areas to prevent spread
